Crystalline PLA and Crystalline PLA Gold
Dr. Mauer has invented the patent-pending techniques and exclusive treatments called Crystalline PLA and Crystalline PLA Gold to improve skin quality. These procedures have had resounding success and patient approval in our practice. The impressive results are clearly visible on the face, neck and chest and have had extraordinary results for our patients suffering from chronic strains and tendonopathies. To date, if there is any substance which may represent a potential quest for a second life for skin, this perhaps is the solution. The results of these treatment can last up to five (5) years, with a natural and soft effect.
The old method of Sculptra® Aesthetic injection is an outdated approach and comes with complications such as nodules and difficulties with procedural injection technique. Dr. Mauer’s method is unique and, with Crystalline PLA Gold, combines modified product with concentrated, state of the art platelet rich plasma, or PRP for short, which provides dramatic effects on the tone, texture and volume of the skin with zero complications to date.
What is Crystalline PLA and Why Do I Want it?
Crystalline PLA is an off-label method of extracting the Carboxymethyl from Sculptra® Aesthetic, or Sculptra, to help correct skin depressions, such as wrinkles, folds, scars, degenerative skin aging, and facial lipoatrophy.
Sculptra is an FDA approved product made from a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body as it works to replace lost collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used for decades in dissolvable stitches and as a facial injectable since 1999 in over 30 countries.
Sculptra received FDA approval for facial injection and consists of two key components:
- Polymerized L Lactic Acid (PLA) – a biocompatible chemical that the body breaks down and is used in dissolvable sutures that are commonly used in surgeries.
- Carboxymethyl (CMC) – a plant based product that gives temporary volume and bulk and keeps Sculptra more cohesive and allows for absorption. In some (all?) cases, it causes swelling, is inflammatory and can cause nodules.
With the Crystalline PLA injection, Dr. Mauer extracts the CMC from the PLA in Sculptra to avoid the inflammatory side effects of CMC. With this modification, we have seen the benefits of
- decreased incidence of nodules
- smaller gauge needles can be used for treatment
- less series of injections needed
- decreased downtime; and
- decreased risk of injury.
What is Crystalline PLA Gold and Why Do I Want it?
Crystalline PLA Gold is an off-label method of extracting the Carboxymethyl from Sculptra® Aesthetic, or Sculptra, and pairing the injection with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to improve the healing process and act as a temporary bridge to enhance the absorption of PLA and optimize cell function during the time it takes for the PLA to begin its visual effect.
Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP for short, is a fraction of your own blood drawn off and spun down and then reapplied or injected to create improved tissue health. It can be used to improve skin texture, lines and wrinkles. By placing it into the deeper skin layer fibroblasts and other cells can be stimulated to a more youthful function. Areas like crepey areas under eyes and in necks can show dramatic improvement. Lines like about upper lips can also improve. And the general texture and turgor of the skin will improve.
With the Crystalline PLA Gold injection, one further benefit we have seen from the Crystalline PLA Gold injection is
- with the addition of PRP, waiting for visual results are no longer an issue.
What happens when Crystalline PLA or Crystalline PLA Gold is injected into the Face?
Crystalline PLA and Crystalline PLA Gold help replace the volume loss of time and age by regenerating and activating skin cells that promote collagen. Essentially, it is a stimulant that helps you grow your own skin and collagen and restore the face to a more youthful look by providing fullness.
When Will I See the Results of Crystalline PLA and Crystalline PLA Gold Injections?
Crystalline PLA – results usually take approximately three (3) weeks to see effect.
Crystalline PLA Gold – with the addition of PRP, immediate effects can be seen.
A series of injections may be necessary and we have found greater visual effects in the second treatment than in the first.
Why am I told to massage after treatment?
Patient compliance is crucial for healing, prevention of side effects and complications. Patients are required to massage the injected area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days.
Where Can I Use Crystalline PLA and Crystalline PLA Gold?
The impressive results are clearly visible on the face, neck and chest and have had extraordinary results for our patients suffering from chronic strains and tendonopathies. Patients suffering from HIV related lypodystrophy have also greatly benefitted from these treatments.
Is there such a thing as too much Sculptra?
Does Sculptra fall under a filler? IF so we answered this question already as well as the one above it.

How many sessions will I need?
Depending upon the area and condition treated, patient factors, the volume of Sculptra® Aesthetic used, and the injection technique, the effect of a treatment may last from 1 to 5 years but the duration of the effect can be shorter or longer. Most areas of treatment will require 2 to 4 sessions, usually at 3 to 6 week intervals, for optimal result. Because individual responses vary, the exact number of treatment sessions required cannot be predicted with complete accuracy. In addition, to maintain the desired degree of correction, intermittent “touch-up” treatments may be needed. After each injection session, tissue volume in the treated area will gradually build up over the following weeks and months as the body produces new collagen. At the time of your next session of Crystalline PLA or Crystalline PLA Gold, your response to the previous treatment will be assessed and additional treatments can be performed if needed to optimize your correction.
